The recent hype is about the Ministerial pay reviews, the adjustments long overdue.
Seriously, nobody would really mind giving them the highest pay in the world, in exchange for the best government in the world. However, we are just not there yet, and might even be on the decline.
Too much negativity about the ruling party has been afloat on the Internet, especially during the election periods. I do not even feel like mentioning them here. Arrogance, out of touch with the people, self-serving. These are some of the perceptions among the common men out in the streets.
I particularly liked a line from a recent TVB drama I was watching. "This city is dying." This might not be unique to Hong Kong, or even Singapore, but most of the major cities around the world.
With globalization, we do get a more "vibrant and varied" society, but as we open up ourselves to the global community, do we begin to lose our identities as well? Norms are formed and each day, messages keep repeating, calling us to conform to some rules or regulations.
Why can't we each have our own way of survival and learn to respect the ways of others? Is there no way for a person to earn his keep with decent effort and yet not work like a pre-programmed machine?
What happened to the hopes and dreams of each individual being?
Meritocracy is a good system, but give everyone a fair and level playing ground, one that allows people to have hopes and dreams. Not one where you only have a choice of A or B, then calling it the freedom of choice. That's not true freedom. I hope for a world where each individual can lead his own life by his choices, and respects the choices of others.
